Windows made for the opening you have
We fabricate and fit Eagle, Crealco and Ultra systems. Every window is cut and assembled to the measurements of your opening, so a replacement fits the wall it goes into and a new build gets frames that suit the plans rather than the nearest stock size.
Which window type suits which room
- Fixed windows suit places where you want light and a view but no ventilation: stairwells, high gable walls and narrow panels beside a door.
- Top-hung windows project upwards and outwards, with the handle on the bottom section. Because the sash shelters the gap, they are a common choice for bathrooms and kitchens.
- Casement windows swing open on side hinges and give a wide, clear opening for bedrooms and living rooms.
- Sliding windows open without taking up space inside or outside, which helps over a counter or beside a walkway. The sliding ranges are on our aluminium sliding doors and windows page.
- Shopfront options with larger fixed panes work for offices, studios and commercial frontages.
Mullions (vertical members) and transoms (horizontal members) can be added to split a large opening into sections, so that part of it opens and part stays fixed. Flush sash is available when new windows need to match an existing project, and frames come in a range of colours.
How to measure an opening
For a first quote, rough sizes are enough. Measure the width of the opening in three places, top, middle and bottom, and the height on the left, in the centre and on the right. Write down the smallest of each, in millimetres. Note whether the opening is in face brick, plaster or an existing frame, and take one photo of the whole wall and one close-up of a corner. Final sizes are checked on site before anything is made, which also shows up openings that are out of square.
Glass options
Most windows are glazed with clear float glass. Where someone could fall or push against a pane, such as low windows, large panes near the floor and glazing beside doors, laminated safety glass is the better choice because it holds together when it breaks. Repair or replace?
A window that sticks, rattles or will not lock often needs a new handle, a stay or an adjustment rather than a whole new frame. Replacement makes sense when the frame is bent or badly corroded, when the opening is changing, or when you want a different window type or more light. If you are replacing several windows, doing them together keeps the profiles and colour consistent across the house.
